One astronomer who believed in the existence of such canals was Camille Flammarion, who was also an incredibly popular author (see Chapter 3). Over his lifetime Flammarion published more than seventy books and numerous magazine articles on a wide range of topics, but most about astronomy. Flammarion’s works did more to popularize the subject of astronomy than any other author of his time. This is quite probably because his books were filled with amazing illustrations of what other worlds could look like up close. Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, the Moon, all were depicted by dozens of artists. His book Les Terres du Ciel (Lands in the Sky) is 800 pages long and has literally hundreds of illustrations covering every aspect of every celestial body known in the Solar System at that time.
